Description

The Gornergrat Bahn takes you from Zermatt up to Rotenboden. It is worth going all the way to the top of the Gornergrat first. At 3100 m, you will find a large viewing platform with views of 29 peaks over 4000 m. The hike starts at the Rotenboden station, where you can already see the Riffelsee to the left of the railway tracks (looking downhill). The famous Riffelsee is an impressive photo subject, especially in the morning or evening hours. In calm weather, the Matterhorn is perfectly reflected on the water surface. If you hike past the Riffelsee, you will reach a second, smaller lake. This is also worth a photo stop. Afterwards, there are various route options to Riffelberg. We choose the westernmost path via Gagenhaupt. This is the least frequented path. Shortly before the end of the hike, you reach the "Bruder Klaus" chapel at Riffelberg. The shape of the chapel is inspired by the silhouette of the Weisshorn in the background.

Check before starting your hike whether the path is open.
