Description

The route leads from the Riffelalp station eastwards. Through the larch forest, the path runs below the rock band "Laubern" towards Grünsee. In the middle of the small alpine meadows, the path turns sharply right and leads back slightly higher up towards Riffelalp. You cross the railway tracks of the Gornergrat Railway, which has been transporting guests to the excursion mountain since 1898.

After about 2 kilometers, the path leads above the Riffelalp Resort. Here once stood the Grandhotel Riffelalp, which made a name for itself as the "Playground of the European high society." In February 1961, a fire destroyed the hotel – it was only reopened as the Mountain Hotel Riffelalp at the end of the 1980s. Around the turn of the millennium, it was rebuilt into the 5-star Riffelalp Resort.

Here, the fantastic perspective on the Matterhorn and various restaurants invite you to linger. The return path to the Riffelalp station follows the tracks of the historic Riffelalp tram, the highest tram in Europe.
