High up in the canton of Uri

Small cableways, big adventures

More than 30 small cableways in the canton of Uri provide access to Alpine villages and hamlets that would otherwise be virtually impossible to reach. Anyone aboard ends up in a region of Uri that most people passing through never see.

Uri’s small cableways were not built for tourists. They were created as the lifeblood of a decentralised mountain landscape – supply infrastructure for Alpine villages and hamlets that had to do without roads. These origins can still be felt today. No queues, no hustle and bustle. Just two small cabins, a few ropes – and a silence at the top you won’t forget in a hurry.

In the Schächen Valley, four cableways join together to form a continuous high-altitude path: from Eggberge via Ruogig and Biel-Kinzig to Ratzi, the route leads from the Klausen Pass towards Flüelen – with sweeping views of the valley and hardly a soul in sight.

A little further west is the Silener High Mountain Trail – one of the most beautiful combinations in the canton. The Chilcherberge aerial cableway takes you to a viewing terrace; from there, the path leads over a suspension bridge in the Schipfental Valley to Golzern, where a short hike takes you to Lake Golzern for a break. Following refurbishment, the Bristen–Golzern aerial cableway will return to service in early summer 2026. In the rear Schächen Valley, the Ribi–Wannelen cableway opens the way to hikes with views of the Stäubenfall – and to a well-earned rest in the Alpine restaurant.

If you want to take things a little easier: from Attinghausen, the cableway takes nature enthusiasts up to Brüsti at an altitude of 1,525 metres, with a memorable panorama of Lake Uri.

What makes these cableways special is not just where they lead. They give you the feeling that you have really arrived – off the beaten track, close to what Uri is all about.
