Anniversary Celebration in Realp – Saturday, 4 July 2026

In Realp in the Urseren Valley, visitors can look forward to a major anniversary celebration featuring a diverse exhibition, historic railway vehicles, and exclusive special journeys on the legendary Furka mountain line. The Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke brings railway history vividly to life – a special event for railway enthusiasts, history lovers, and families alike.

History of the Brig – Disentis Line

The 96-kilometre route between Brig and Disentis has connected regions, people, and valleys for a century. It served as an important transport corridor for the construction of hydroelectric power plants and the Furka Base Tunnel, and remains a major tourism axis today – including as part of the route of the Glacier Express.

Its origins date back to 1910, when the Brig-Furka-Disentis Railway was founded. In 1914, the first section between Brig and Gletsch was opened. After economically difficult years, the newly founded Furka-Oberalp Railway took over the project in 1925 and completed the line.

On 3 July 1926, the continuous connection between Brig and Disentis was officially inaugurated. At the time, the route crossed the Furka mountain line at over 2,100 metres above sea level and could only operate in summer.

With electrification from 1942 and the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982, year-round operations later became possible. Thanks to dedicated railway enthusiasts, the historic mountain line was preserved and has once again been fully operational since 2010 with steam and diesel locomotives.

Following the merger of the Furka-Oberalp Railway with the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn, today’s Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn was created in 2003.
